The
Daily Mail, Weekend Section - Saturday 15th May 2004:
'Backing Blighty'
Matthew Jukes's column was devoted to English wines,
and mentioned English Wine Week. "I expect you all to drink
nothing but these home-grown beauties in homage," he says.
His recommendations for English wines were: |
|
|
Clay
Hill 2001 Late Harvest Dry White, Kent (£6.99 The Winery,
tel: 020 7286 6475; Clay Hill Vineyard, tel: 01892 891356)
They use no additives, pesticides or fertilisers, and Will
Davenport (see below) helps with their winemaking. "This
new 2001 is delicious. Made from 6% Bacchus and 35% Reichensteiner,
the creamy texture and mouthwatering finish are delightfully
balanced."
|
|
|
Davenport
Horsmonden Dry 2001, Sussex (£5.99 Vintage Roots, tel:
0118 976 1999) "Will Davenport quietly gets on with making
some of England's most complex white wines. This is a world-class
creation and it's a bargain. Look out for a luscious 2002
vintage, which will be on the shelves by midsummer. The
counterpoint between quince, gooseberry and melon fruit,
and the lime juice acidity, is breathtaking." Will Davenport
also makes the Clay Hill wine.
|
|
|
2001
Camel Valley Cornwall Brut, Cornwall (£14.95, Waitrose
- South West stores only; Camel Valley Vineyard, tel: 01028
77959) "This elegant sparkler is smooth and charming, and
would appeal to lovers of riper styles of champagne. A real
crowd pleaser."
|
|
|
2003
Curious Grape Bacchus, Kent (£6.49 Majestic, English
Wines Group at Tenterden Vineyard, tel: 01580 763033) "The
weather was spot on, so 2003 should turn out to be the most
amazing vintage for English wines. This is bursting with
juicy, fresh fruit-cocktail aromas and has more texture
than ever."
|
|
|
2003
Denbies Surrey Gold, Surrey (£5.49, Denbies Wine Estate,
tel: 01306 876616, Sainsbury's) "A soft, fruit-cocktail
creation, it has a seamless palate and a chirpy finish."
|
|
Matthew
Jukes' Wine of the Week is
|
NV
Chapel Down Century Extra Dry, sparkling wine (£9.99
English Wines Group at Tenterden Vineyard) "A bottle for
true sparkling wine devotees. The palate is linear, with
an excellent, lifted attack on the nose and a lingering,
palate-cleansing finish. Lime, gooseberry and elderflower
jostle for position on the palate, with elegant patisserie
notes hanging back. This wine needs bottle age to show its
full hand but, with a few months under its belt, it will
be absolutely sublime."

The
Times, Weekend Section - Saturday 8th May 2004
Although Jane MacQuitty's piece started less
than favourably, she concurred that "incredibly, there are
now some palatable English wines that make acceptable summer
tipples." Ridgeview Merret Bloomsbury 2000 "is reasonable
value at £14.99 (Waitrose)."
